Three Household Shopping Tips That Really Add Up

Household essentials are something we all have to buy. The good news? You don’t always have to spend more to get what you need.

This week on Take Control Tuesday, Mansa Musa shared simple ways to stretch your budget without sacrificing quality. The key isn’t buying less. It’s buying smarter.

Mansa broke the strategy into three easy steps.

First, know what your household actually uses. Every family has its favorite brands and products. When you know what belongs on your shopping list, you’re less likely to grab something just because it’s on sale. That helps reduce impulse purchases and makes it easier to recognize a real bargain.

Next, learn when to buy.

Many household items, like laundry detergent, paper towels, trash bags, and cleaning supplies, go on sale on a regular cycle. Instead of waiting until you’re completely out, keep one backup on hand. Once you open it, start watching for the next sale. That way, you’re buying tomorrow’s necessities at today’s better price.

Finally, compare the real price.

Don’t assume the largest package is always the best deal. Check the unit price instead. Compare the cost per ounce, roll, sheet, or bag. Then factor in quality. Sometimes spending a little more on a product that lasts longer actually saves money over time.

These small habits may not transform your budget overnight, but they can leave more money in your household month after month.

Mansa also challenged listeners to make one simple change on their next shopping trip: before looking at the package price, look at the unit price. You may be surprised by which product offers the best value.

Smart shopping isn’t about spending less. It’s about spending wisely.
