This week’s Take Control Tuesday is extra special.
We are celebrating 11 years of helping listeners make smarter financial decisions with Mansa Musa. So for this edition, we took it all the way back to where it started — the very first Take Control Tuesday conversation.
The voices may sound younger. However, the financial wisdom still hits just as hard today.
One of the biggest takeaways from that first episode? Paying your bills on time alone does not guarantee a good credit score. Mansa explained that payment history makes up about 35% of your credit score. While that is the biggest factor, the remaining 65% also matters.
That surprised a lot of listeners then, and honestly, it still surprises people now.

Another major point focused on credit card balances. Mansa broke down how carrying balances over 30% of your available credit can hurt your score, even when payments are made on time.
For example, if you have a $1,000 limit and owe more than about $333, your credit score can start taking a hit.
The conversation also touched on credit inquiries.
Applying for store credit cards just to save a few dollars at checkout may seem harmless. Still, those inquiries can negatively affect your credit profile depending on your future financial plans. Mansa also explained how certain finance company accounts can impact credit scores differently than traditional credit cards or loans.
Finally, he shared why the age of your credit history matters. New credit accounts can temporarily lower scores, while long-standing positive credit history can strengthen them over time.
