Have you ever gone to the store for one item and walked out with five? Or logged onto Amazon for one purchase and somehow filled your cart?
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
This week on Take Control Tuesday, Mansa Musa kicked off a brand-new series called “Why We Buy.” The goal is simple: understand the strategies retailers use so you can make smarter spending decisions.
Mansa reminded us that stores and online retailers are designed to encourage spending. Product placement, sale signs, customer reviews, recommendations, and even the order items appear on your screen all influence buying behavior. There’s nothing wrong with that—it’s how businesses operate. However, knowing what’s happening helps you stay in control.
Another important takeaway? None of us are completely immune to impulse buying. Even the most careful shoppers can get caught up in the moment. That’s not a character flaw. It’s simply part of being human.
So what’s the best tool you can use before spending your money?
Pause.
Before you put an item in your cart or click “Buy Now,” ask yourself one simple question:
Why am I Buying This?
If the purchase fits your needs, your budget, and your goals, move forward with confidence. If you’re buying because of the excitement of the moment, give yourself a little more time to think it through.
Throughout this new series, Mansa will unpack more of the marketing strategies that influence our spending habits and share practical ways to become more intentional shoppers.
This week’s challenge is simple: the next time you’re about to make an unplanned purchase, stop and ask yourself, “Why am I buying this?” That one question could save you more money than you realize.
