Take Control Tuesday: Turn Gas Purchases Into Savings

Gas prices have been putting pressure on household budgets for months. The frustrating part is that most of us cannot simply stop buying fuel.

That was the focus of this week’s Take Control Tuesday conversation with Mansa Musa.

Mansa shared a simple five-step system designed to help families turn an expense they’re already paying into what he calls a “small household subsidy.” The goal is not to eliminate gas costs. The goal is to be more intentional and get something back from money you’re already spending.

He says small savings may not seem significant at first. However, when used consistently, they can create meaningful financial benefits over time.

Highlights From Our Conversation

  • Start by finding a fair price. Identify one or two gas stations that consistently offer competitive prices in your area. That becomes the foundation of your strategy.
  • Build a rewards system around your purchases. Join station loyalty programs and consider a rewards credit card that offers cash back on fuel purchases.
  • Only use rewards cards if you pay them off monthly. Mansa stressed that rewards should never come at the cost of high-interest debt. If you’re carrying a balance, the interest can quickly outweigh any rewards earned.
  • Concentrate household spending. Instead of everyone fueling up wherever it’s convenient, consider using the same rewards program or card across the household. The rewards can add up faster.
  • Track your results. Spend a few minutes each week reviewing fuel purchases, discounts, and rewards earned. Paying attention helps improve habits.
  • Give the savings a purpose. Use rewards to pay down debt, build an emergency fund, or ease monthly cash flow pressure.

Mansa shared an example showing how two drivers spending about $150 a week on fuel could earn hundreds of dollars annually through a consistent rewards strategy. That amount may not make anyone rich, but it can help offset rising costs and support larger financial goals.

His message was simple: in difficult economic times, small savings matter. Building a system around spending you’re already doing can create extra breathing room in your budget.

Next week, we’ll look at how to apply a similar strategy to grocery spending.
