Detroit Students Can Earn, Learn, and Create Through The Yunion

School may be winding down, but something exciting is just getting started for Detroit youth this summer.

I had the chance to talk with Jazzmin Pitts from The Yunion, and I immediately loved what they’re building for young people across the city. This isn’t just another summer camp situation. These programs combine creativity, mentorship, education, leadership, and real-life career exposure all in one place.

That matters right now.

The Yunion has already spent more than a decade investing in kids through its Keys to Life Performing Arts Summer Camp. This year marks the program’s 12th summer. Students get the chance to explore music, theater, dance, and digital media while building confidence along the way.

At the same time, the camp keeps students engaged academically with math and English language arts activities designed to help prevent summer learning loss. Jazzmin explained that mentorship also sits at the center of everything they do. Young people aren’t just showing up for activities. They’re building relationships and learning life skills that can help shape their future.

The Yunion Helps Detroit Youth Level Up This Summer

Then there’s the new program that really caught my attention.

The Level Up Workforce and Leadership Development Camp takes things even further. The six-week program uses an “earn and learn” model, which means students can actually earn while developing workforce and leadership skills.

Honestly, that’s huge.

Participants will learn financial literacy, career readiness, and college preparation skills long before senior year arrives. The program also includes talent tours and career exposure opportunities through a partnership with Focus: HOPE. That partnership gives students a firsthand look at different industries and career paths they may not have considered before.

Jazzmin also shared that the camps still make room for fun. Weekly field trips and hands-on experiences help balance learning with the traditional excitement kids expect from summer camp. Everything about these programs feels intentional

The Yunion understands that young people need more than busy work during the summer months. They need support. They need opportunities. They need spaces that help them dream bigger while preparing for real life.

Registration remains open through June 5. Parents can learn more and sign their children up at The Yunion Camp Registration.
