According to GNN, Oregon has recently become the first state in the US to offer free nurse visits to new mothers and fathers statewide. The Family Connects program is opt-in and comes at no cost to the family. The nurse is empowered to connect the family with any additional service they may need, whether that’s counseling, psychiatric care, financial assistance, or even a hearing aid for a grandparent who’s looking after the child.

More babies die in the U.S. than in other wealthy countries, especially Black and brown babies. This is a big problem. The Family Connect program is currently in 35 agencies in 16 states, including Oregon Texas and Illinois. The “at home nurse” service could be a model for other states.
