I’ve known the Sheard family for years, so catching up with Kierra Sheard-Kelly never feels like an interview. It feels more like checking in with family.
That’s exactly what happened when we recently talked about her brand-new single, “Shine.”
The conversation came just days after Stellar Awards weekend, where Kierra and her mother, Karen Clark Sheard, were both part of the celebration. Watching from home, I could see the energy, but Kierra told me being there was even more special.
While there was plenty to talk about, I really wanted to hear the story behind “Shine,” a song that instantly made me smile.
The uplifting track celebrates joy, gratitude, purpose, and confidence. More importantly, it encourages listeners to appreciate the blessings that often go unnoticed.
As Kierra explained, that message is exactly why the song connected with her.
Kierra Shares an Uplifting Message with “Shine”
Her brother, J. Drew Sheard, first played the song while they were headed to a family game. Right away, she felt something special about it. After some encouragement from friends, she headed into the studio, added her own verse, and made the song her own.
What struck her most was a lyric written by J. Drew: “Every breath has a victory.”
That line became the foundation of the message she wanted to share.
During our conversation, Kierra reflected on how easy it can be to overlook simple gifts. Waking up. Taking a breath. Getting out of bed. Moving through the day on your own strength.
Those aren’t small things.
They’re blessings.
“Shine” reminds us to slow down long enough to recognize them.
Listening to Kierra talk about the song, I couldn’t help but notice a common thread running through so much of today’s gospel music. More artists are returning to themes of gratitude, mercy, and God’s goodness. That’s certainly what comes through in this record.

Along with releasing new music, she’s continuing to grow as a speaker and preacher. I’ve watched clips from recent messages she’s shared, and it’s clear God is stretching her in new ways.
