It was so good to hear that voice again. I hadn’t talked to my brother Javen in way too long, so catching up felt like old times.
Javen has spent the last decade-plus building something different. He stepped away from music to pastor, and that journey has taken him through some incredible highs and some very difficult losses.
Today, he pastors NOW Church in South Florida. The church recently opened its second location in Hallandale, Florida, joining its Davie location. Javen says walking in his purpose has shown him just how much God had already placed inside him.
That realization is also bringing him back to music.
A New Season for Javen
His new single, “No Turning Back,” marks a new chapter for Javen. The song carries a familiar gospel message but delivers it with fresh energy. At its heart, it’s a decision to follow Jesus and keep moving forward.
Javen told me the song came after a season of tremendous loss. He lost his brother, who served as his associate pastor. His executive pastor also passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The church had already lost its building.
Through all of that, Javen found himself asking where to turn. Then came a renewed desire to write, sing and get back into the studio.
While walking on a treadmill, the idea for “No Turning Back” came to him. An old gospel standard, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus,” helped spark the melody and message. He sent the idea to producer D-Lo, and the song quickly began to take shape.
Now, Javen is preparing for his next full project, God Is Good, coming this fall. The album will include “No Turning Back,” along with collaborations and songs shaped by everything he has experienced.
From the Fire to the Music
I loved catching up with Javen because this music feels personal. He’s not just singing about coming through the fire. He’s lived it.
And his message is simple: If you go through the fire, don’t come out with nothing.
