It’s always a good time when I catch up with my brother, Fred Hammond. This week, we talked about his return home for the Detroit Gospel Legends Tour, happening Friday, October 31st at the Fox Theatre.
Fred couldn’t hide his excitement. “We just wanted to show people the music that came out of one of the greatest cities in the world,” he said. With a lineup that includes The Clark Sisters, Deitrick Haddon, Byron Cage, Lisa Page-Brooks, Carvin Winans, and Marvin Sapp, this tour is a full-on celebration of Detroit’s gospel roots.
Fred’s also released an ode to the city, a track called “What Up Doe”—and yes, it’s every bit as Detroit as it sounds. He told me, “We want people to be proud of this city… we’re celebrating the music that came out of Detroit—it’s legendary.”

So, if you’re planning to go, Fred says come ready to sing. “Do your vocal warm-ups,” he joked. “We don’t want you just to watch—we want you to sing with us!”

Hood Book: A New Vision for Faith-Based Storytelling
Fred is also stepping into new creative territory with Hood Book, a bold film and stage project blending faith, realism, and powerful storytelling.
He describes it as a fresh way to show God’s love—through the eyes of a young man who’s aged out of foster care and struggles to believe God still cares. Using AI and imaginative storytelling, the film connects deep biblical truth to modern life, in a way audiences can truly relate to.
“This isn’t rewriting the Bible,” Fred said. “It’s how God can speak to people in a language they understand—real, straight up, and hood.”
