If you know Bishop Bruce Parham, you already know music and ministry have been a part of his life for as long as he can remember.
Literally.
The Philadelphia native says he started singing when he was just two years old. By six, he was singing at conventions and church gatherings. More than four decades later, that early calling has grown into a remarkable career as a gospel recording artist, pastor and bishop.
Now, Bishop Parham is adding something different to the story.
He’s coming to Metro Detroit for Vanessa Lynn’s gospel stage play, Prince of the Pulpit, as part of Parables Entertainment’s 20th anniversary celebration.
From Gospel Music to the Stage
Bishop Parham takes on the role of Bishop Aaron Baxter, a pastor preparing to retire after 40 years of leading Solid Ground Ministries.
He has already chosen the minister he believes should succeed him. Then, a young man from the church returns with a very different claim.
Years earlier, Trent Baxter was told he was the “chosen one.”
That’s when things get complicated.
The congregation starts taking sides. Family dynamics come into play. There’s romance, humor, faith and even tragedy woven into the story.
Bishop Parham says he’s excited to return to the stage, especially with such a strong cast and storyline.
He’ll share the stage with Deetta West, Dennis White and other talented actors. There’s also a special family connection with Dennis White, whose mother is Bishop Parham’s god sister.
A Detroit Connection That Goes Way Back
Detroit isn’t exactly unfamiliar territory for Bishop Parham.
His gospel music journey brought him here through Bishop Andrew Merritt and Straight Gate International Church. He was featured on the Straight Gate Mass Choir project Faith In The House, including the powerful song “Cover Me Lord.”
That experience remains special to him.
Bishop Parham also continues to pastor Oasis of Refreshing Ministries in Delaware and lead Fresh Fragrance Covenant Fellowship. And after more than 40 years in gospel music, he’s preparing new music for 2027.
So yes, he’s got plenty going on.
For now, though, Detroit gets to see another side of Bishop Bruce V. Parham.
Prince of the Pulpit takes the stage at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn on Saturday, September 19, at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, September 20, at 3:30 p.m.
