Born Chloe Anthony Wofford in 1931, Toni Morrison was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. As one of the most celebrated authors in the world, Morrison also wrote plays and children’s books. Her novels have earned her countless prestigious awards including the Pulitzer Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.
Toni attended Howard University in Washington, and continued her studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Eventually, Morrison taught English at Howard University and Texas Southern University where she wrote her first book “The Bluest Eye” in 1970. Morrison received the Pulitzer Prize, in 1988, for the novel Beloved which was eventually turned into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey. (Sources: womenshistory.org & famousafricanamericans.org)
Morrison passed away August 5, 2019 at the age of 88.
