Take Control When Your Money Isn’t Enough

It’s Take Control Tuesday, and Mansa Musa and I are starting a new series for a time when many families are feeling the financial squeeze.

Gas is expensive. Groceries cost more. Housing, insurance and energy bills keep putting pressure on household budgets. Even people who work hard and manage their money carefully may find that their paychecks just aren’t stretching far enough.

So what happens when you’ve done the right things, but the money still isn’t enough?

Mansa says we need to look at more than financial knowledge and discipline. We also need to consider financial capacity. That’s the money and resources we actually have available to meet our needs.

You can know how to budget, save and manage credit. But if your household needs $3,000 a month for essentials and only brings in $2,500, you still have a gap. As Mansa puts it, you can’t budget money you don’t have.

That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve made bad financial decisions. Sometimes the cost of living simply outpaces what your household can afford.

That’s why our new series focuses on three stages: Survive, Stabilize and Recover.

Highlights From Our Conversation

Mansa and I want listeners to know that this series isn’t about blaming people for struggling. We’re talking about working families who are doing their best and still facing financial pressure.

I know it can feel overwhelming. But where you are financially today doesn’t have to be where you stay.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share practical strategies to help you survive the immediate challenges, stabilize your finances and begin recovering your financial well-being.
